National recognition for work of hospital’s sustainability team
The work of the sustainability team Salisbury NHS Foundation Trust has been celebrated at a national level.
Colleagues from Salisbury District Hospital were presented with the first-ever Sustainability Award at the 2025 Health Estates and Facilities Management Association (HEFMA) Annual Awards.
The award celebrates innovation and impact in sustainable estates and facilities management, with the trust’s Sustain and Reclaim Centre being highlighted as a leading example of how to reduce waste, reuse valuable resources, and embed sustainability into everyday operations.
Staffed mainly by volunteers, the centre helps to identify innovative ways of preventing items from going to landfills.
By re-using and refurbishing furniture and non-medical equipment, the centre is able to save money and support patients care.
Examples of the team’s work includes:
- Upholstering, restoring and repairing chairs, for staff and patient use
- Cleaning and refurbishing crutches
- Rehoming furniture and equipment, including drugs trolleys and examination couches
- Donating items such as stoma equipment and crutches to charity partner 4Ukraine
Niall Prosser, Chief Operating Officer, said, “This award is testament to the creativity and commitment of our Sustain and Reclaim Team and volunteers.
“Their work shows how practical innovation can make a real difference to patients, staff and the environment.”
Gemma Heath, Sustainability Manager, said, “The Sustain and Reclaim Centre Team members are highly skilled, and are experts at creative solutions in giving new life to old furniture and equipment.
“It’s much better for our pockets and our planet to reuse what we’ve already got.”
