Local Mental Health Trust hosts support event for student nurses in BSW

Avon and Wiltshire Mental Health NHS Partnership (AWP) recently hosted two events to support student nurses to complete their studies.

The Reducing Pre-registration Attrition and Improving Retention (RePAIR) student nurse events were held in partnership with the University of the West of England for both second and third year nursing students with the aim of reducing pre-registration attrition and supporting the retention of newly qualified nurses.

The events saw informative talks highlighting the support, development and opportunities available at AWP throughout the event.

Alice Corbel, Practice Education Facilitator at AWP, said: “It has been a pleasure to organise the AWP and UWE PNA RePAIR Student Nurse events. There was a great atmosphere at both second year and third year events. The students were really enthusiastic, engaging and keen to hear what was on offer. Our presenters were brilliant, passionate and informative.

“We really hope the students take up the offer of Career Conversations and Restorative Clinical Supervision, through our Professional Nurse Advocates. As we know, this can have a positive impact on the health and well-being of our staff. Especially at the start of their nursing journeys, building this into their ongoing practice and taking care of themselves.

“In turn, we hope this improves student nurses and newly-qualified attrition rates and positively impacts recruitment to the Trust. Thank you to everyone who has helped and supported the events.”

Katie Williams, third-year UWE student said: “The RePAIR event has been great at providing reassurance that help and support is available once I qualify as a Mental Health Nurse. It’s enabled me to understand what the future holds as a nursing career.”
