Hospital works with care homes in exercise initiative to improve outcomes

Great Western Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has introduced exercise classes to care home residents in Swindon, helping to get people moving in a fun way.

The group exercise focuses on improving mobility and physical strength, aiming to keep people moving and reducing the risk of falling.

It’s also a social time which brings all residents together, enhancing emotional wellbeing and building confidence, with activities which are accessible to everyone in a welcoming and supportive environment.

The 12-week programme, involving nine care homes across Swindon, is a great example of how the Trust is working in partnership with local health, care and voluntary organisations, to improve the physical and mental health of local people.

They are working with Swindon Borough Council, Wiltshire and Swindon Sport Partnership (WASP) with Sports England, Lawn Manor Academy and Lydiard Park Hotel and Conference Centre.

Swindon Senior Games Festival marks the end of the programme with residents travelling to Lydiard Park Hotel and Conference Centre for a fun day of activities including target throw, foam javelin, tin-can alley and golf putting.

Care homes which took part in the most recent programme include Orchid Care Home, Edgehill Care Home, Fessey House Residential Care, Ridgeway Rise Care Home and Lansdowne Hill Care Home.

Congratulations to the residents of Lansdowne Hill Care Home for winning the Swindon Senior Games Festival.
