There are things you can do prior to pregnancy to reduce these risks:

Diabetes pre-conception checklist

  • Check your HbA1c - aim for 48mmol/L or less
  • Medication review - are they safe?
  • Take 5mg Folic Acid daily
  • Check your eyes and kidneys
  • Establish and maintain a healthy weight
  • Keep active
  • Stop smoking and reduce alcohol intake to safe limits
  • If you are pregnant or planning a pregnancy, please discuss with your GP regarding a referral to your local diabetic/pre-conception clinic, this may vary dependant on where you live.
