BSW hospitals working together to tackle surgery backlog

The RUH, GWH and Salisbury hospitals have been working together to tackle paediatric surgery waiting lists in the area.

The partnership initiative began in April when children who had been waiting considerable time for surgery were treated at Salisbury hospital.

As the initiative progresses over coming week, more than 400 children are expected to receive treatment at the three hospitals during joint surgery weekends.

Speaking to the Health Service Journal publication, RUH Chief Executive Cara Charles barks said the plan was an effective way of helping to tackle waiting lists.

“We work really collaboratively and closely with the partners in the ICS but particularly with the two other acute hospitals, Great Western Hospital and Salisbury Hospital.

“Over the next few weeks, we’re running collective oral surgery lists for children, because between us we have got significant waits.

“What we’re doing is running a number of weekend sessions with multiple theatres, with the teams coming together from all three sides to actually treat 400-odd children.

“We are exploring different ways of doing that — it is a really exciting initiative. And if that works well, we will open up specialties as well.”
