Multi-million-pound fundraiser for new scanner at RUH

The Royal United Hospital in Bath has kickstarted an epic fundraising drive to expand its innovative PET-CT scanning technology.

Four million pounds is needed to deliver a new PET-CT scanner, which is one of the most powerful tools in modern healthcare.

It can provide critical insights across many different treatment areas, including several types of cancer, dementia and rheumatic, neurological and cardiac diseases.

By combining functional and structural imaging, the scanner is vital for early diagnoses, precise treatment planning and ongoing disease monitoring.

More than 1,700 individual scans take place at the RUH each year, and demand is continually increasing.

The RUH Medical Physics and Radiology teams currently perform more than 1,700 individual scans annually and demand is increasing every year.

Rhyannon Boyd, Associate Director of RUHX, the hospital’s charity, said: “The existing PET-CT scanner is nearing its life expectancy, and technology has significantly advanced since 2016.

“The latest scanners are three times more sensitive, and provide clearer results and faster scans, which is crucial for improving patient care.”
