New device providing increased dignity for female patients
Swindon’s Great Western Hospital has championed a new device that offers female patients greater dignity when needing to go to the toilet.
The UniWee helps females who are unable to walk with the ability to pass urine in a pain-free way while either sitting or laying down.
Staff in the hospital’s emergency department, along with their colleagues working in trauma and orthopaedics, collaborated with a number of NHS organisations from across the south west in bringing the UniWee into service.
The device takes the shape of a modified male urinal bottle, but has a wider opening, which means patients can use it with minimal movement and without the need of staff assistance.
Dr. Siân Thomas, Emergency Doctor, Great Western Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, said: “We are thrilled to take this project further.
“Our future studies will explore how the UniWee can reduce catheter use and improve bladder care for patients.
“By gathering evidence, we hope to ensure that more patients and clinical teams benefit from this simple yet transformative solution.”
