GP practices

Menu

GP practices, with community pharmacies, are cornerstone of NHS healthcare services within our area, generally being the first point of contact for the NHS.

They can manage common health conditions and provide ongoing care for chronic illnesses. Promote health and prevent illness through advice and screenings. Educate people about their health and treatment options. Support people to access specialist care when needed.

In recent years we have seen practices working more collaboratively at scale to offer patient services and increased the types of clinical professionals who may see you for your clinical need, including nurses, pharmacists, paramedics. Practices also work with community pharmacy and community nursing and specialist teams.

You can contact your GP practice online, in person or on the phone between 08:00 to 18:30 Monday to Friday (excluding bank holidays).

When you make a request by phone, online or visiting the practice, the practice will consider your request for an appointment or medical advice and tell you within one working day what will happen next. This may include:

    • An appointment that day or a subsequent day
    • A phone call that day or a subsequent day
    • A text message responding to your query
    • A referral to an NHS community pharmacist  or another NHS service
